Brompton Design Project
Initiated by Brompton Estates, the V&A and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the Brompton Design Project supports the partnership between the creative and business sectors. Working with South Keninsington's world-class institutions and local creative organisations, the project can play a significant role in making the renaissance of South Kensington a reality.
Design provides a starting point for this regeneration: embedded in the DNA of the Brompton area, from the founding of the Conran shop to the new arrival of Skandium, it is the glue that holds together this meeting point of the arts and sciences, creative industries and the retail sector.
The Brompton design project began last year to increase the presence of new design in an area renowned for its important design shops as well as its historic links with design and education since the founding of the Victoria and Albert Museum and Royal College of Art 150 years ago. So far it has included temporary installations in shops and shop windows by Ron Arad, Martino Gamper and Caravan; a roaming gallery by curator Rachael Barraclough; a temporary bar designed and run by RCA students, and, for last year's LDF, a projection by Lippa Pearce on Empire House, Brompton Road.
The design project began this year by encouraging design organisations to use vacant spaces in the area for exhibitions and events during the London Design Festival 2007. Please see press releases for details.
